Should Napping At Work Be Allowed?

The thought of a workforce collectively catching up on lost sleep while at work sounds like the worst idea history. However, we’re not going to deny that we are all guilty of dozing off one or two… ok, maybe even three times, at a really important work meeting.

Here we see minister Lim Guan Eng, Minister of Finance casually catching a snooze at a parliament meeting in November last year. Although, he denies falling asleep, we're only human and the YB Lim Guan Eng has a lot on his plate!

Also, in the US, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader was also caught snoozing during former President Obama’s speech. Yikes!

Napping at work is frowned upon but would our minds work sharper and better after we’ve managed to squeeze in perhaps a 20 minute nap?

The ideal amount of hours an individual should receive is between 7-8 hours. Any less than that will result in a series of health problems like obesity, heart disease and mental health issues.

All that sleep deprivation can take a toll on people's health, career and the economy…

Some countries now have less of a stigma of hitting the snooze button at work. In Japan, companies are installing sound-proof pods to encourage workers who work long hours, to get some rest. The idea is slowly making its way to major companies too.

The well-known ice cream company Ben & Jerry's, have set up nap rooms for a quick midday snooze. The accommodations are hardly luxurious but the 10-by-10 room, is equipped with a futon couch and a thin blanket. How cozy...

One of the cool job perks working at companies like NASA, Google or Uber, is that they all strongly believe in the best way to achieve a good work ethic is to of course get the right amount of sleep each night. And well if you don’t, a quick 20-30 minute nap at the office is advised.

So, before your boss starts yelling at you for “sleeping on the job”, tell them that the only way to be sharper and more productive is to keep napping… and you’ll wake up 20 minutes later feeling like a million bucks!
